Which MUSIC COURSE TO select?
Selecting the musical course that you like to pursue, depends on three main criteria - Age, Ability & Interest
AGE
Depending on the student’s age, certain courses are recommended; but not confined to only those, as there are always exceptions and there are prodigies out there who defy all odds and create wonders!
There is no upper age limit to learning music!
Age | Suitable options | Comments |
2 - 5 years | Drums & Vocals | The rhythm and pitch sense are inculcated in this age, which greatly benefits them once they start pursing music at higher capacities later. |
5+ years | All instruments & Vocals, except guitar | Some kids are quite determined to learn guitar only. In those cases, we usually recommend them to start off with Ukulele and then gradually shift to Guitar |
8+ years | All instruments & Vocals | Can pretty much choose whichever they would like to learn, and it is more about personal inclination & liking that matters |
Ability
In general, people are born with either an in-born ability to have perfect pitch and rhythm sense or have the ability to learn it slowly over a period of time through proper training. This learning process, includes dedicated efforts from the student in trying to understand the frequencies (pitch) and the patterns in frequencies (rhythm). That’s the reason why we have suggested drums & vocals for 2-5 years kids, as it is easier for them to form associations with these patterns at an early age and have a head start!
For people who likes to learn percussion instruments (like drums), the rhythm sense plays an important and essential role, while for all other instruments and vocals, both pitch and rhythm sense are essential.
To develop into a good musician, it is very important & crucial to put in the needful efforts to improve your pitch (through vocal practice & pitch identifier tools) & rhythm (by practicing alongside metronome & counts).
INTEREST
Often times we see that the parents try to put in their own likings into the child while selecting courses, which adversely affects the student’s progress, as the student lacks interest or affinity towards that course.
Since learning music comes as a result of lots of hours of dedicated practice, lack of interest from the student’s side can result in frustration for the student, the trainers as well as the parents who would want to see results, yet not understanding that the kids has no interest towards that course to begin with!
So, always begin with the course that your child loves (based on their age and ability) and through the process of learning that one particular skill, they can move and build developing other skills, as per the parent’s liking and inclination, at a later stage!
What if i want to switch?
In general, 3-6 months is a needful time for the kids to understand what they like, if they would want to pursue it further, to make up their mind for the known hardships which would involve regular practice and sincere efforts, or to simply switch to a different course altogether.
In the rare case where the student seems to be not showing much interest towards the course selected, we allow students to switch to the course of their liking and make adjustments to transition them smoothly to the new course.
Learning - piano vs keyboard
In terms of the skill enhancement, learning Piano is a bit difficult comparatively, as it focuses on the dexterity of both the hands equally. But by doing so, the students tend to develop a strong music playing capabilities, which makes them skilled musicians. Hence, even though it is tougher, Talent Hub recommends learning the Piano syllabus. However, it is up to the students to choose whether they want to learn Piano or Keyboard.
On the other hand, learning Keyboard opens up the creative imagination & the knowledge to compose and arrange modern day digital music, by incorporating a variety of different musical instrument sounds, beats and music styles available in Keyboard, at the press of a couple of buttons. Since it is easy to create interesting music through different sounds and beats, kids (below the age of 5 years) love to explore keyboard more than a Piano. So, it might be a good option to begin with a keyboard, to instigate that interest in them. However, all the fancy things in keyboard can sometimes become a distraction as well too, as they might just play around with those, & avoid doing the essential practice needed to enhance the playing skills.
You can buy a basic keyboard, if any of the below mentioned conditions are true.
However, if the intention is to learn music professionally, then buying a Piano (Acoustic/Digital, based on the budget) would be the recommended option.
Once the student becomes proficient in playing the keys, they can choose to use those skills on a Piano or a modern day Keyboard/Synthesizers/Workstation to arrange, compose and produce music as per their taste. At that point of time, they can invest buy professional pianos or keyboards.
Cost - PIANO vs KEYBOARD
Acoustic Pianos (Grand Pianos & Upright Pianos) are usually big and bulky, occupy a lots of space, not easy to transport, and are priced upwards of Rs. 3,00,000/- to a whopping Rs. 50,00,000/- price tag. The quality of the sound & playability varies according to the price. They have 88 keys.
Digital Pianos are the digital replica of these acoustic pianos, and are priced starting from Rs. 30,000/- and goes all the way to Rs. 5,00,000/-. Depending on the brand, model and price paid, the quality of the keys, keys action, sound quality and playability of the instrument varies. Most of the digital Pianos have 88 keys. In general, Digital Pianos in the price range of Rs. 1,00,000/- are most suited for all of the learning needs & as well as for performances.
Keyboards (synthesizers) are electronic instruments that can do the job of a piano, as well as do much more, by synthesizing sounds and beats of different instruments through the electronics present inside. A typical keyboard has 61 keys (5 octaves), although it can vary from 24 keys (toy keyboards) to 88 keys (replicating a piano). Keyboards prices vary from Rs. 5,000/- (for non-touch sensitive models), to Rs. 5,00,000/- (Professional synthesizers/workstations)
Adapting to playing guitar through ukulele
Usually, Guitars are bulky and difficult to handle for kids below the age of 8 years, and also could hurt their fingers due to the intense pressure exerted by the strings on the finger tips and so, the general recommendation would be to start learning Guitar after the age of 8. However, there are kids who have mastered playing Guitar at a very young age, showing that nothing is impossible!
If the kids are determined to learning guitar only, it is better to start off their learning experience through the usage of Ukulele which is an instrument that looks similar to a guitar, (but much smaller in size) and has nylon strings that wouldn’t hurt their fingers. This way, they will learn the basics of frets, how to move their fingers across the fret board, understand strumming patterns and also become proficient in playing simple tunes and songs. Once they are comfortable, we can get them a small sized guitar (as per their size), transition their learning from Ukulele to Guitar, and continue the journey from there on!
Need for owning an instrument
Progress & perfection in any skill comes with hours & hours of practice put in place. When the trainers teach the student what to practice, the students are expected to practice them at home and come prepared for the next class, to have the optimum progress in the journey of learning music.
Without an instrument at home, it becomes a futile effort in expecting the student to progress and it can only lead to the student loosing interest due to lack of practice & frustration to meet the parent’s expectation.
In case of drums, all you need is a practice pad and a pair of drumsticks to begin with, before getting an actual drumkit, while for other instruments, you would need to buy the actual instrument itself, for practice.
In specific cases, where parents would not want to invest in the actual instrument unless they are sure if their child would continue or not, it is better to
But, whatever the case maybe, it is absolutely important that the students own their musical instruments right from the beginning & practice them regularly. Without an instrument, there cannot be a question on the progress, whatsoever!
